Trentino - Alto Adige

Pinzolo ski resort in Italy

Pinzolo sights include skiing, paragliding, hiking, dog sledding, horseback riding in the Dolomites. And also - the conquest of high peaks, difficult roads, icy waterfalls. And this is not the whole list of what you can do in this cozy settlement located high in the mountains.

Where is

Pinzolo is a commune located in northeastern Italy. Refers to the administrative center of Trento (Trento). From Rome (Roma), the capital of Italy, Pinzolo is at a distance of 624 km. The nearest major city is Verona, located 150 km from the village. On a geographical map, the commune can be found at the following coordinates: 46 ° 10 'north latitude, 10 ° 46' east longitude.

The village is located in the Dolomites, in the center of the Adamello-Brenta natural park, at an altitude of 785 m above the sea level. m It is the largest city in the Val Rendena Valley, which separates the Adamello and Brenta mountain ranges. Directly next to it is only one mountain. This is Doss de Sabion (2100 m high). From its top a magnificent view of the surroundings opens and the neighboring resort of Madonna di Campiglio is clearly visible.

The population of the commune is 3054 people, and I must say that the number of inhabitants is growing: almost a hundred years ago, in 1921, their number was 1777 people. The village covers an area of 69 km2. It is inferior in size to the Madonna di Campiglio ski resort, located a fifteen-minute drive from it, but the ski area is more spacious. At the same time, prices are cheaper, and the city itself is more quiet and calm.

Near the commune there is another resort Carisolo (Carisolo). They are separated by the river Fiume Sarca di Campiglio, and the settlements are connected by a bridge. That is why, walking through one settlement, you can find yourself in another without being noticed.

Description

Piazza San Giacomo is the main street of the commune. Here is the tourist office of Ufficio Informazione Turistica Pinzolo Val Rendena. Here you can get a map and other useful information about the area and various services for tourists. Details of their work can be found here: www.campigliodolomiti.it.

Near the tourist office, in the same building, there is a cinema Cinema Paladolomiti. Nearby is another organization called Pro Loco Pinzolo. She is engaged in popularization of the resort, organizes interesting events. At the corner of the square is a municipal school.
Opposite Pro Loco Pinzolo is the City Hall of Comune di Pinzolo. It goes to the square with the back, while the main entrance is on Viale della Pace.

There is a library in the city, located at Via al Sole, 30. Not far from it, on Strada Statale 239, there is a small monument to the knife grinder, Monumento all'Arrotino. It was established in 1969 in memory of the times when, due to the plight of the region, before the resort appeared here, the locals left the commune in search of a better life.

There are a lot of shops in the village, but when shopping, you need to remember that the locals love Siesta very much. Therefore, the lunch break here lasts from 12.30 to 15.30.

Sights

There are few architectural sights in Pinzolo due to the fact that a severe fire of 1913 almost completely destroyed the settlement. That is why its antiquity can only be judged by the few surviving temples. For example, the church of St. Vigilio (Chiesa di San Vigilio) appeared here in the XIV century. It is famous for its fresco “Death Dance” by Simone Baschenis, which adorns its outer wall. The first mention of the chapel of St. Jerome (Chiesetta di San Gerolamo) dates back to the 16th century, and the central church of St. Lorenzo (Parrocchia San Lorenzo) appeared two centuries later.

Church of St. Lorenzo

Parish Church of St. Lorenzo (Parrocchia San Lorenzo) can be found on Piazza Libertà, 13, and overlooks Piazza S. Giacomo. The construction of the temple began in 1765 on the site of the located chapel, which was named in honor of St. Lorenzo.

The project was developed by architect Peter Bely (Pietro Bianchi), who ten years before built a temple in neighboring Carisolo. The main work was completed in two years, and in 1778 the facade was completely finished. The church was consecrated in 1837.

The baroque-style temple is oriented east. The side walls and rear are not decorated with anything and look very ascetic, while the facade is elegant. It is painted more brightly, in the center down is a portal, above it is a large window. On the sides of the front door and window, and above it are large images of saints. Above the front door is an inscription. To the right of the church is the bell tower, built in 1867. It is visible from all parts of the commune. A clock is set under the belfry, its pyramidal dome crowns it.

In 1913, the temple was badly damaged by fire. Including burned down the calm belfry. And only in 1947 he again crowned the building. But this time it was made of copper. In the seventies, a chapel and a baptistery were attached to the temple.

Church of St. Lorenzo has one nave. The main altar is made of multi-colored marble. Interestingly, it was originally intended for a temple located in Verona. Above the central niche, a picture is painted in oil on black stone, which shows the risen Jesus, who appeared to Mary Magdalene.

Church of St. Vigilio

Church of St. Vigilio (Chiesa di San Vigilio) is located on Via San Vigilio, in a very quiet area of the city. Near it is an ancient cemetery. This is the oldest church in the commune: it was founded in 1362. The builders used granite as the building material. In the XVI century. the building has been expanded. Now the temple has a rectangular shape, a bell tower, three naves, arches, pointed arches that rely on granite columns. The south side of the facade is the church of St. Vigilio frescoes whose appearance dates back to different eras.

The most famous mural is the Dance of Death (La Danza Macabra), written by Simone Baschenis in 1539. It depicts images of sinners, regardless of their social status: there is the Pope, the king, the rich and the poor, young and old. The picture signals the equality of people in the face of death, while dancing skeletons between them indicate the inevitability of fate.

Inside the temple is richly decorated: there are many frescoes (unfortunately, many of them are damaged by time), on the dome are images of saints, altars with gilding. There is also a series of paintings telling about the life of the young bishop Vigilio, who received martyrdom, preaching the gospel in the valley.

The temple for excursions is open in the summer, from June 1 to September 30, except Sunday and Monday morning. Opening hours: from 9.30 to 11.30 and 15.30 to 17.00. Those who wish to examine it at another time of the year or day will have to agree separately, and not the fact that it will succeed.

Chapel of St. Jerome

The Chapel of St. Jerome (Chiesetta di San Gerolamo) is located on Piazza S. Gerolamo, 1. It is very small and does not particularly strike the eye. The exact date of its appearance is unknown, but there is evidence that in the Middle Ages the monks used it as a branch. The first information about the chapel dates to the end of the XVI century.

Recently, the chapel was restored, and interesting frescoes were discovered inside the temple. One of them depicts St. Jerome and was written in the XVI century. There is also a gilded wooden altar, the appearance of which is attributed to the XVII century. Next to it is a sculpture of the Mother of God made of wood.

Once a year, September 30, the day of St. Jerome, local people gather here to serve. After the ceremony, a buffet is served and a festive program is organized.
